One-year type coin; only date without "L" designer's initial and with very high relief. Very first gold dollar! Historical key date. Many a coin doctor would improve via mechanical smoothing of the tiny X -- and then sell as MS66 or Superb Gem BU. Actually a Pattern (see below). Interesting die cracks on reverse caused by this unique issue's high relief (all subsequent gold dollars had lower relief).

    FUN FACTS
    🔴
Tiny 1,000 mintage, all produced on May 8 as per Mint Director Robert Patterson's notes.
Patterson ceased production because the very high relief was causing minting problems.
Many tallied in the population reports are resubmissions or crossovers of the same coins, or even misattributed With L's.
Far more cartwheel luster than usually seen in MS65 much less mere UNC. Rotate under a grader's light for proof.
Easily top 1% for eye appeal. Gorgeous yellow color despite being 100% non-doctored.
Easily MS66 or Superb Gem BU by third-tier slab and raw standards, after the usual doctoring (mechanical smoothing of the tiny "X")

    CU
    ,000 for MS67; ,000 for MS67.
Mere second year of California Gold Rush and minted with its actual gold, as per Mint records.
Extremely sharp detail for this often-weak issue.
First year of gold dollars! Produced to compete with private minters, such as Bechtlers.
Opposite version of 1909-S VDB cent (without designer's initial versus with it; both first year of type). But the S VDB has 484 times the mintage despite costing far more!
Almost all surviving specimens are mint state, no doubt because speculators bought all of them due to their novelty status (first year of gold dollars; unique high relief; tiny 1,000 mintage; only gold dollar without the "L" designer's initial).
Far too rare to promote and from which to profit, so demand and thus prices remain ridiculously low. Dealers instead push extremely common, extremely profitable modern coins.
Actually a Pattern because of its unique high relief, incredibly tiny mintage (lower than that of many called patterns), very first gold dollar status, and unique lack of the designer's initial.
Try to find another No L that is anywhere near this nice for anywhere near this price.
Extremely easy to authenticate due to the uniquely repunched stars directly below the bust and elsewhere.
