Description
Slightly over sized carte de visite photograph of the Russian bass.Fyodor Stravinsky (1843 - 1902) was a Russian opera bass and father of Igor Stravinsky.
He studied with the Belgian baritone Camille Everardi, after graduating from the St. Petersburg Conservatory where he had studied with Henriette Nilsson-Saloman, Pietro Repetto and Luisa Viarto, Pauline Viardot's daughter. He made his debut in Kiev in 1873, singing at the Kiev Opera until 1876. He was hired by the Imperial Opera in St. Petersburg in 1876 where he sung until his relatively early death in 1902. Stravinsky was known as a singing actor and he filled the mantel of his great predecessor Osip Petrov.
Stravinsky created several roles for Tchaikovsky: The King in "Vakula the Smith" in 1876, Dunois in "Maid of Orleans" in 1881 and Mamirov in "The Enchantress" in 1887. He also created among other roles King Frost in Rimsky's "The Snow Maiden" and Skula in "Prince Igor"..
