    Description

From Jadlowker’s personal scrapbook comes this historical 6.5” x 9” original and most fascinating formal gathering of singers and celebrities inside the Berlin Hofoper.
The celebrities we have discovered include Maria Moissi, wife of actor Alexander Moissi third from left, Hermann Jadlowker next to her, Albert Niemann next to Jadlowker, Madame Kaiser Titz, wife of actor Erich Kaiser-Titz, bass Otto Helgers between Niemann and Kaiser-Titsch, tenor Carl Clewing holding the program, baritone Franz Egenieff with orders next to Clewing, bass Eduard Kandl between two men to the right of Egenieff, coloratura soprano Etelka Gerster is in front.
This must have been a truly special occasion with the legendary tenor Albert Niemann, who created the role of Siegmund for Wagner, as well as the first Tannhaüser in the ill fated first presentation in Paris of Wagner’s opera.  Etelka Gerster, who ran her singing school in Berlin was one of the most lauded coloratura sopranos of her day and a true rival of Adelina Patti’s in Europe and the United States.  The other assembled singers, including the legendary Hermann Jadlowker were active singers from the Royal Opera in Berlin.  Based upon the dates of the singers in the photograph and their tenures with the company, this is most likely 1910-1911 Engenieff’s only contract year with the company during Niemann’s life.
Despite condition issues, a probably unique photograph of historical importance.
