Description
Constantin Shapiro carte de visite photograph of the legendary Russian tenor as Siegmund in "Die Walkure"A pupil of Gabel and Ernesto Rossi, Ershov (1867-1943) made his debut in St. Petersburg in 1893 and after singing in Turin and Reggio Emilia returned to Russia in 1894 to sing in Kharkov. He made his Mariinsky debut in 1895 in Faust. The Mariinsky was to become his artistic home until his retirement from the stage in 1929. The great spinto tenor of the Mariinsky, he sung 55 roles in 55 operas from Tristan to Raoul. He declined an invitation from Cosima Wagner to sing in the 1901 Bayreuth Festspiele as he did not want to have to learn his roles in German. While the leading heroic tenor at the Mariinsky he did not seek out to create roles, though he did create the role of Truffaldino in the 1926 Russian premiere of Prokofiev's, "The Love of Three Oranges". Despite the fact that his entire career after 1894 was in Russia, he is considered to be one of the greats of the Golden Age of opera.
