Birgit Nilsson
(May 17, 1918 – December 25, 2005) was a celebrated Swedish dramatic soprano who specialized in operatic and symphonic works. Her voice was noted for its overwhelming force, bountiful reserves of power and the gleaming brilliance and clarity in the upper register.
Miss Nilsson attained international stardom after a performance as Isolde in Wagner's
Tristan und Isolde
at the Metropolitan Opera in
New York
on December 18, 1959.
In 1966, Miss Nilsson was asked to appear in a rather unusual performance at the Metropolitan Opera. During a showing of
Tannhäuser
, she was asked to sing the parts of both Venus and Elisabeth. They did not appear on stage at the same time, of course!
Birgit Nilsson is probably best known for her portrayals of Turandot in
Turandot
, Brünnhilde in Richard Wagner's
Der Ring Des Nibelungen
(a role with which she made her La Scala debut in 1958), Isolde in
Tristan und Isolde
, Elektra in
Elektra
and Die F
ärberin
in
Die Frau ohne Schatten
.
Miss Nilsson is also known for her interesting relationship with Rudolf Bing. When Bing was asked if Birgit was difficult, he replied, "Not at all, you put enough money in and a glorious voice comes out." When preparing her taxes Miss Nilsson was asked if she had any dependents. "Yes," she said, "Rudolf Bing."
Miss Nilsson is still revered as the greatest Wagnerian soprano of the last century.
Mignon Dunn
(born June 17, 1931)
is a leading American dramatic mezzo-soprano. She made her official debut, in the title role of
Carmen
, in 1955 with the Experimental Opera Theatre of America/New Orleans Opera Association.
In 1956, Dunn made her first appearance with the New York City Opera, in a small role in
Troilus and Cressida
, and sang with that company again in 1957, then in 1972 (
Carmen
) and 1975. The mezzo-soprano made the first of her 653 appearances with the Metropolitan Opera in 1958, as the Nourrice in
Boris Godounov
, conducted by Dmitri Mitropoulos. She went on to portray a great variety of roles with that company; her final performance there was as Klytemnästra, in
Elektra
, in 1994.
Eva Marton
(born
June 18, 1943
) is a
Hungarian
dramatic
soprano
, particularly known for her operatic portrayals of
Puccini
's
Turandot
and
Tosca
, and
Wagnerian
roles.
In 1972, she made her debut as the Countess in
The Marriage of Figaro
at the
Frankfurt Opera. In 1973, Marton made her debut at the
Vienna State Opera
in Puccini's
Tosca
. In 1977, she sang at the Hamburg State Opera, in the role of the Empress in
Richard Strauss's
Die Frau ohne Schatten
, and made her San Francisco Opera debut in the title role of Verdi's
Aida
.
In 1981, she performed at the Munich Opera Festival in the title role of
Die ägyptische
Helena
by Richard Strauss,
Wolfgang Sawallisch
conducting. She sang the role of Leonore in
Beethoven's
Fidelio
in 1982 and 1983, both performances conducted by
Lorin Maazel.
Marton's new roles in this millennium include Isolde in Wagner's
Tristan und Isolde
at Hamburg State Opera in 2000, and Kundry in
Parsifal
in
Barcelona
and
Lisbon
in 2001. She retired from the operatic stage after performing the role of Klytemnestra in
Elektra
in
Barcelona
,
Spain
in March 2008.
