Original Associated Press obituary Wirephoto of the influential French-born composer. The text below the photograph reads "(NY 32–Nov. 6) PIONEER OF MODERN MUSIC DIES –– / Edgard Varese, regarded by many as the first man to think of music in three dimensions, died today in a New York hospital following surgery. Varese, who was born in France and came to America after World War 1, was a pioneer of electronic music and acknowledged American master of the young avant-grade. He was 82. Edgard Victor Achille Charles Varèse was a French-born composer who spent the greater part of his career in the United States. Varèse coined the term "organized sound" in reference to his own musical aesthetic, which had focused emphasis on timbre and rhythm.
